For my Future Cultures research project I will be looking at memes. I’m hoping to build on the insights I gained from a previous digital artefact and its real-world successes and controversies: Meme etiquette.
Etiquette is defined, according to the Oxford Dictionary, as the customary code of polite behaviour in society or among members of a particular profession or group. And meme etiquette, being etiquette surrounding the use of memes. Etiquette isn’t much so mandatory and there are no legal obligations- it’s just socially polite norms.
Meme etiquette is the unwritten rules of the meme community- what is acceptable and what isn’t. These rules can affect anyone engaging with memes: from meme pages with thousands of followers, to the humble instagram user, and even now to businesses. It is ethically given that users should follow these rules- but what happens when they don’t?
