How COVID-19 Changed Our Lives

Learning through Experiencing

Background

My name is Gemma McCammon and this is my Digital Artefact for the subject BCM325 Future Cultures. This subject, as the name states is all about the future. For my DA I wanted to look at something that was currently going on in the media. If you ask anybody today what is the biggest thing happening in the world right now, I am almost 100 percent positive that most would meet you with an answer regarding the Coronavirus.

I want to look at the Coronavirus and how it is affecting the world currently as well as how it will affect the world in the future, especially since this subject is all about the future. Specifically, I wanted to take a look at education and the future of education. I am in my final semester at university and as of now we have fully transitioned to online learning. So I…

Contextual Essay

Learning through Experiencing

This semester, I really struggled creatively. I am not sure if it was due to the fact that it is my last semester and I can just not wait to finish. Instead of letting this stress me out, I just decided to go with something I was comfortable with.

The aim of this project was to consider the future in the next 5, 10, 25, or 50 years. For my DA the focus is on the very short term future. The Coronavirus is such a new interruption into our society, so no one really knows what will happen in regards to anything. But I wanted to focus on education and the future of online learning. I am one of the many students whose education got affected by the virus. Within a matter of weeks, the university shifted online and is now going to be online next semester too. I was…

Tweet Tweet

Learning through Experiencing

As I discussed in Part 1 of this blog post, live-tweeting was not completely new territory for me. However, that is not saying that I did not have things to learn or improve on throughout the session.

The movies that I live-tweeted over the past few weeks include:

  1. Ghost In The Shell
  2. The Matrix
  3. Robot and Frank
  4. Blade Runner (2049)
  5. Ready Player One
  6. Alita: Battle Angel

I mentioned in part one of my live-tweeting blog that I wanted to get better at engaging with other student’s tweets. Not only is live-tweeting a skill, but the ability to engage with other students is something that is very important too.

I engaged with other students by retweeting tweets that…

They Said What?!

Learning through Experiencing

As I mentioned in my first blog comments post, commenting on blogs is something I have done before. However, as with anything, there are always ways in which you can improve.

For these comments, I wanted to work on setting a framework that I could stick by to ensure that I was hitting all the talking points that I wanted to include. I find that I sometimes go off track and end up saying pointless information. So for me, it was crucial to have a guideline and to stick to it.

I commented on the following three blogs:

  1. https://parisperspectiveblog.wordpress.com/2020/05/05/bcm325-beta/
  2. https://tgoldsmithblog.wordpress.com/2020/05/06/this-beta-be-good/
  3. https://jessicammcv.wordpress.com/2020/05/08/bcm325-da-beta/

For the last posts I commented on I mentioned that I felt the comments were not the best, that I definitely had room for improvement.

I first commented on Jess’s post. I did not know really anything about her concept so it was really interesting to be educated on…

Beta Pitch – Corona Virus

Learning through Experiencing

The major shift in my DA has been where I am getting that primary source of information from. I was once relying on interviews as a source of information, however, I have realised that is not realistic. So I am now relying on my Facebook Page UOW Rants, as well as my twitter feed for that information.

One thing I did not really get to engage with in my pitch is how my DA addresses the future. Nobody expected the Coronavirus to turn out how it did, and that is one reason i really wanted to focus on it, as it had never been done before. However, I realise that is impossible to predict the future (unfortunately), so I decided to look at how it will affect the future of online learning. How have students felt about online learning in the past, how they currently feel about online learning and…

Pitch 1 – Corona Virus

Learning through Experiencing

As mentioned in my pitch I am interested in seeking out how the Coronavirus is going to affect the in which we (university students) learn as well as assessing the future of online studying and how it could progress over time.

“There could be greater opportunities to expand online offerings as a result of this crisis. It will be worth questioning the extent to which the online experience within universities may stick” (Lau & Ross, 2020).

This quote really piqued my interest as it is what I am questioning in my DA, could this lead to a shift in a higher proportion of online studying.

I think with how quickly technology has advanced there is definitely a possibility of this occurring. Some degrees already provide access to lectures, quizzes, and other content online. So in the years to come, we could see a shift to a whole degree becoming online.
