Future Adverts and Current Banners

The term cosplay or Kosupure was first coined by Nobuyuki Takahashi around 1984 in some magazines after returning from the Los Angeles Science Fiction World con (Rahman, 2012, p. 318). The Uow Cosplay society has been operating for a much shorter time. First created back in 2015 by Emily Coleman operating under the Video Game Association at the time with about 5 to 8 members, the Cosplay Society later became an actual club in 2017 and now has around 20 to 30 active members and around 365 members of our club group page on Facebook. We have hosted countless events and even won UNILIFE’s ‘New Club of the Year’ award at the Uniclub’s awards.

My Digital artefact started to showcase my club in a documentary to break stereotypes. This changed over the time to something I am much more satisfied with, My DA has become a series of adverts I will be releasing over the next years plus keeping up on creating eye-catching and welcoming events for new members.

a lotta dumb

I have already made an advert for our location photoshoots which are new this year. My aim is to make these advertisements short and sweet, the first one sitting at around 1:30 minutes one of the comments on my beta suggested condensing the adverts to around 30 seconds, which would have been unrealistic on this one. Its eye-catching, using our noticeable yellow colour and presenting it under the UOW Cosplay Societies page helps make it look like more of a promotion than someone random promoting the club , also these videos will be pinned to the top of our Facebook group like one of the commenters suggested along with all being shown as O-week to represent our club.

Looking into the future the location photoshoot advert is paving the way for many more to come, I don’t want them to be too spammy to the page though otherwise, no one will see them. To name a few, as well as the timelines that will go with them, are:

  • Guided Workshops – one will go up in August or September after our August guided workshop but also before our next guided workshop.
  • Big Group Cosplays – a showcase and advertisement for the next group will go up in January after we complete our big group cosplay for the year, which is already in its planning stage.
  • Big Convention Group Meetups – A show case of all our group meet ups from each convention will go up sometime in November after the convention period ends.

As the Secretary my job is to book rooms for the club, sometime last year before our current social media coordinator I also started to put events up along with eye-catching backgrounds for new people so they didn’t have to open the event up to see the details.

“Almost every waking moment is either directly or indirectly spent with media. Yet when asked about it, people tend to forget most of their media use, mainly because they are concurrently exposed to multiple media at the same time” (Deuze, 2016) These act almost like Internet Banners for the society. I aim to make them fun usually using our signature yellow along with funny backgrounds or names that include puns based off the convention they are featured around.

My Digital artefact follows the FIST principle:

Fast: I have experience with video and photo editing before.

Inexpensive: I already own the video editing program and only pay around $3 a month for the photo editing program which I already rented out before this.

Simple: I’m an admin/moderator of the group page so I’m able to post as the club page.

Tiny: I was already previously doing one of these things, creating the background images for the events, now I’ve just added on the videos.

The first video advert was decently successful, around 23 people reacted to it on Facebook, right now our club doesn’t use IGTV, but it might be an interesting future endeavour. It will be interesting to continue and hopefully pass on next year since I will be leaving and will not longer be able to be Secretary.

Last Lot of Live Tweets

This time around my posts on Twitter was a bit more refined. I did make sure to include some links to different articles this time around which my first set of tweets definitely lacked. To do this while watching a movie I would look up an object of the movie that interested me and then the movie name afterwards, it seemed to work 90% of the time with finding articles that no one else seemed to have found.

I also focused a lot more on character and costume design this time around. Especially since I love costuming, I would look up if the costuming of a certain movie was important or how long it took to create.

I also still posted some interaction making posts which I will call a bit memey and purely based off of jokes like these ones.

I definitely didn’t post as many tweets this time since I wanted my tweets to be well thought out including links to articles with interesting reads or making certain they were relevant towards the scenes. I tried to make certain that I wasn’t too late with the tweets and if the movie went to long past an article I was trying to find I would usually scrap that tweet since no one might get it anymore. I think the key to live tweeting is being fast and being relevant, two challenges that if successful, the interactions go up in the number of engagement.

Speaking of interactions, like I said earlier I did try to post tweets that would hopefully gain a higher interaction, which I think compared to my last group of tweets gained a lot more engagement. I also liked almost every tweet I agreed with which ended up being a lot. I attempted to reply to more tweets but I think compared to the last lot of live tweeting, I didn’t reply to as many. I also attempted to retweet some tweets that I heavily agreed with or were interesting but again unlike the last lot of live tweets I don’t think I retweeted as much.

To further improve on live tweeting, I think I could add more questions to my tweets which would open up room for easy engagement with others, since I did see others doing this in their tweets towards the end of the session. Tweet deck once again helped immensely although if I ever needed to find a gif for something I would go straight to my phone app, find the tweet and look for a gif from there. The ability to have the same hashtag twice one to be able to read and one to keep up with the tweets were just too helpful and I’d definitely recommend it in the future. Here is the link for those interested! This subject has by far been one of my favourite subjects in my course and it has taught me a lot about engagement and the future.

Three Comments for Beta Presentations

Amanda Tait comment

Starting off with what I think is my best comment is on Amanda’s digital artefact on 3D printing to restore the coral reefs. Amanda looks to research how 3D printing can be useful to help restore the coral reefs. She has 3 different blog ideas that all connect in an interesting way.  I’ve also noticed her posts on twitter about how here project is going along but also noticed that these posts aren’t getting much traction. In order to help get more engagement, I’ve suggested using Instagram. Even though Instagram is usually viewed perhaps not the best platform for some digital artefacts, I’ve encouraged Amanda to look to using this one as a way to propel an audience towards her blogs, since it can be hard for some to find a way to get people to view their WordPress. This comment was the one where I’ve linked the most links in, mostly suggesting tips and tricks for posting on an Instagram blog, especially for non-profits since I think Amanda’s DA is very similar as well as why engagement is useful on Instagram.

ATaani COmment

My second comment, which wasn’t my best, but I also don’t think it was my worst was on Taani’s Digital Artefact. Taani looks to advocate strong famous women in different careers who may have faced oppression to get to where they are. This is an interesting Digital Artefact but since I couldn’t think of a lot of things to suggest it ended up being one of my shorter and perhaps more unhelpful of my three comments. I ended up linking articles as to why it is important to keep up engagement on Instagram since this is the one platform she is using. I perhaps could have suggested using more platforms such as WordPress or Twitter to further her ability to talk about these women but at the time I did not think of that.

a lachlan comment

Lastly looking at probably my worst comment of the three. Lachlan wants to create 4 videos matching the seasons relating to the different parts of an empire and then comparing it towards our present. I think this is the most unique Digital Artefact I’ve come across but also perhaps the most confusing. I didn’t know exactly what to suggest for Lachlan so really just suggested more ways he could promote his videos to people outside of the BCM subject. Since he made no mention of promoting it to anyone either in the BCM subject or outside Especially since other engagement besides this subject would be useful for reiteration in his last videos. I suggested Reddit since it’s the platform that is probably the most relatable for his digital artefact, I also tried to suggest a link with some tips for easily promoting Youtube videos.

Cosplay Society Doco-Advert? Beta Presentation

My digital artefact has gone through some iterations and will now be featured as mainly a form of advertisement for the club. As a club we don’t really have any forms of advertisements, most of our members come after O-week and our new member email, or through finding our society on the UOW clubs page. It’s very clear that “social media advertising will continue to remain the most important platform for advertisers.” (Hague, 2018) and I want to use this to my advantage by creating small advertisements videos to work for each social media that we own and the events that we run.

First Live-Tweeting Experience

BCM325 has been my first introduction to live tweeting in a subject. And really at all. I have never live-tweeted in my life before this class, like I will go on twitter and read through the hashtags while watching the newest dumb reality tv show but I have never sat down and live-tweeted my thoughts throughout a movie or show. It’s actually quite fun. I started by using Tweetdeck which meant it was easy to see the hashtag flow through.

My favourite thing to do while watching a movie, whether it be new or old is going in blind, which means not looking at any trailers or any of the plots of the movies, but to just go in completely “blind”. And looking through the list I found a lot of movies I’d never watched before, I actually don’t think there was one.

So I tweeted that. And from what I’ve found, “going in blind” either works fantastically or not fantastically. For Metropolis it worked terribly, mostly because I got lost at one point and had no real idea what was happening cause I was constantly looking up and down from the screen.

With the other movies, it worked fantastically, since because I had never watched them before I was intrigued to see where they went!

I mostly didn’t know where to start with my live-tweeting so I looked at comparing movies and games:

Or analysing the movie itself which was especially important in Week one which was the screening of Metropolis a silent film from 1927:

I never paid much attention to mentioning what part we were watching in the movie because everyone was watching the same scenes at the same time, it did mean I needed to be quick, however, before the movie moved on and no one remembered what I was talking about:

I was also retweeting tweets from other students when they said something I had either missed or not known how to phrase in such a rush. these tweets also helped me form other things I noticed into a proper sentence that wasn’t entirely rushed as we all seemed to be noticing similar things:

Since it was only week one, I was only really retweeting tweets at the time and not actually engaging in conversations just yet, which did change in week 3 and 4.

For the second week, I stuck to mostly critically analysing the film, at this point in time I thought we had to put out 10 tweets each week not just 10 tweets for the assignment, so I was tweeting about everything:

Also drawing from what I know of popular culture:

Moving onto weeks 3 and 4 which is where I started to engage fully with other students as well as general critical analysis, my tweets had calmed down in amount each week but also throwing a few memes in as well.

cap 2 tweets.PNG

The ones above in particular shows conversing with others.

Also below finding fun facts from the film.

I ended up missing Ghost in the shell, But my tweets for Johnny Mnemonic fit generally into the same sections for my others, either memes, critical analysis, fun facts or interactions.

I will admit however Johnny Mnemonic ended up being more of a meme tweeting week than a serious tweeting week. My spelling in a lot of these tweets was also not that great but I was in a rush and not really focusing on it.

DA Pitch Review & Feedback

My first comment was on ‘People Help the People’ by Rebecca Fuller whose DA was about creating a community for women to contact while feeling unsafe while walking home. She has found that women generally tend to feel unsafe while walking home, and she wants to create a public website or an app to join women together to other women they can talk to if they feel unsafe while walking alone, that has emergency services, location services, an opportunity to ring an alarm an opportunity for women to talk about what they want to change in the future.

I think my comment found here was one of my more useful and helpful ones. I tried to suggest about how she could begin her DA as a facebook group and then integrate it to a website or app in the future since it would be a ton easier than trying to separate out who is a male or female on a website or an app. I suggested integrating the safe zone app as well which might help her, I have never used this app so I don’t actually know how well it works so I couldn’t give advice on that, but it seems similar to what she wants to create. I sadly could only provide one link but I didn’t know what else to mention.

cap2 bcm325.PNG

For my second comment, I was reviewing Katrina’s DA ‘Don’t Get Me Started’ which would be a podcast where her and her friends and other people who want to be on the podcast would be venting about their frustrations and offering support. It would be once or twice a week through Skype and uploaded to Soundcloud or Spotify either raw or edited. She wants to provide a place for peer support and to help people vent.

I tried not to be too harsh on this comment, I tried to suggest helpful critiques and suggestions to perhaps make her podcast a bit more organised by knowing what topic each week was going to be about, suggesting that right now if it was general venting, it might get a bit tough to edit. I definitely used way too many ‘perhaps’s’ and ‘maybe’s’, which I shouldn’t have to make it more to point.

I wanted to suggest helpful things to use in her DA. I suggested using Discord instead of Skype since I have had experience with both and like Discord much better and provided a link to that. I also suggested that using Soundcloud would be easier to get her podcast on since I found a link that showed how hard it might be to get a podcast on Spotify.

cap 3 bcm325.PNG

My last comment was reviewing Kiana’s DA of her Youtube channel which is a continuation from one of her previous DA’s which is a Youtube channel, she posts content of what she likes doing, funny things or things she finds funny or basically anything she enjoys, it is very easy DA but comes across complications while editing her videos since she finds it boring.

I think this was one of my worst comments. I tried to be helpful in the beginning but not knowing what editing software she was using might have eliminated that. I suggested Wondershare which is a video editing software I heavily rely on.

My last bit to my commenting was by far the worst out of all the comments. Kiana mentioned that she could see Youtube doing educational streams for schools in the future, so I suggested a similar article that showed how people are already live streaming educational streams on Youtube’s main competitor, Twitch. My last bit of commenting didn’t help her DA at all but I also didn’t know how to suggest any more that could help her DA, which maybe I should just leave out in the future.

The Cosplay Society Documentary DA Pitch

For my digital artefact, I plan to make a mini-documentary about my club the cosplay society. We have a couple of big events coming up over the next couple of months where I think I will be able to get a good showcase of my club for us to show at O-week, club’s days and just for people interested in what we do in the club.

With this documentary, I also want to break some stereotypes people might have about cosplay. I want to form stronger connections with some of the clubs we already work with as well as making some new ones. Hear more about it up top!
