My BCM325 Future Cultures DA is going to be looking into the future of camera technology in the next 10 years. I am interested to look at how new technology will assist the modern day photographer. These include bigger sensors, wireless transfer of files via the cloud, and AI inside cameras to assist you.
My DA fits the F.I.S.T principle:
Fast: I have access to information through the internet. I also have access to my camera which I am going to film it on.
Inexpensive: This will not cost me anything.
Simple: I have a plan I am going to follow as outlined in my pitch.
My DA will explore the use of CGI technology, this is the special visual effects that are created with the use of computer software. The main software used my small companies and people is DeepFake it is often involved with swapping faces, it is commonly used in celebrity porn videos and movies.
My DA will be a series of blog posts that explore to use and effects of CGI technology, especially Deepfakes. I will also be attempting to use the software in an attempt to make my own Deepfake.
For my digital artefact, I created a YouTube Channel with useful information and discussions on the ethical implications on tracking humans. The area of study I choice to explore encompassed an aspect of cyber surveillance, geoslavery and tracking devices which has not yet been fully unraveled by society. Throughout this project I have been able to draw conclusions using my own experiences as someone who has been tracked along with using academic, pop culture, news and political sources to frame my argument involving the ethics of tracking humans.
In the context of this investigation, I cumulatively utilised primary experimental research (a discussion video with my family) and secondary research to fully engross myself in the content…
Over the last 7 weeks, I have been engaging in a number of screenings while also participating in something called ‘Live tweeting‘. During the screening of these movies and series, my peers and I have been engaging in discussions on Twitter through the #BCM325 which provided a fantastic medium to unpack thoughts and concepts. Live tweeting on Twitter allowed for quite a lot of discussion to happen between my peers while the screening was happening but also created somewhat of a community as we all became connected through the hashtag while talking about the screenings each week. Twitter definitely allowed for a lot more discussion to happen between my peers which was highlighted at the end of some screenings where we were prompted to talk about a theory, but no one wanted to say anything out loud. Quite interesting.
Live tweeting this screening was a bit difficult, especially when trying to find information about the piece while keeping up and paying attention. So for this screening, I did have an insufficient amount of tweets as I was trying to figure out what was going on as well as push back the feelings of posting anxiety (anyone else?). Even though I didn’t contribute as much as I wanted to I did end up posting some tweets and they did receive some social engagement in the form of likes and re-tweets. The most interesting source found for this movie was the Reddit post, I discovered that Reddit is an excellent source to get some opinions as well as find some explanations for things that I didn’t understand which was very helpful.
Next was the 1973 ‘Westworld’ screening, which played on the theme of technologies giving the privileged an experience like no other through an amusement park and visitors having free reign to do whatever they want. When the phrase “And nothing can possibly go wrong” is used, you know for a fact that something is going to go down, and it sure as hell did.
A lot of issues and moral questions ended up being brought up in this session by my peers who were really engaging. Again, dying inside of posting anxiety is not the most helpful thing, especially when live tweeting. However, A lot of my engagement this week was focused towards liking, re-tweeting and a conversation (pats self on the back). My peers were all on the ball in this session and were primarily tweeting what I was thinking in a more elaborate way than I could muster at the time. Again, ideas of morals and technology were prevalent and undoubtedly the most crucial question that was asked in the screening of Westworld.
I approached live tweeting this film through likes and re-tweets as it was difficult to pay attention to the storyline while also finding information about the film to post. I think this action thriller was the hardest for me to follow which definitely showed in my limited amount of social engagement. Although I didn’t engage much with this film, I did end up agreeing with what my peers were discussing online and again found that they were tweeting what I was thinking.
I approached the act of live tweeting for this week in the form of liking, commenting and re-tweeting (hell yeah), and found that my peers were having a more interesting conversation with me through twitter because of it. I did also go down a tangent with my research with this screening and found some cool subreddits to do with Glitches in reality. I found this screening and live tweeting to be a lot of fun, which made interacting with my peers a whole lot easier.
Black Mirror’s ‘Be Right Back’ (2013) was an unforgettable screening. The episode was devastating and ended up giving me full body chills. The idea of being so consumed with grief and a company taking full advantage of this was very disturbing. Even the concept of technology being able to imitate and become someone based on their pictures, videos and (social media?) data, when they have died, is beyond terrifying, and something that I don’t think should be able to ever exist.
In this screening, the episode ended up engrossing me, and I worked on liking and re-tweeting to keep up my social engagement. I did make the odd comment and found that they also gain some engagement so I was happy about that. Again, in this live tweeting of the film, my peers were very much on the ball, and I found myself reading tweets and completely agreeing with what was being said.
When screening this film, I ended up live tweeting a lot more than I had previously. This was a topic that I had earlier talked about in another class and had some information to contribute to the discussion that was happening during the live tweeting. I received a lot of engagement from my peers in this screening and found that I was having some interesting conversations with people on the topic which was quite fun. A lot of my peers had quite interesting things to say, and I ended up finding some fascinating points being made during the screening that I liked (included below).
I ended up tweeting quite a bit at this stage and had some great conversations with my peers online. I found that it was definitely a lot easier to tweet and talk to my peers online when I had watched the episode before we screened it. I was able to find some interesting sources from Reddit, and it also allowed me to focus more on what was happening during the live tweeting and participate more. This screening was definitely my best in tweeting and engagement terms.
Tracking children has become an extremely contentious topic within our technologically advancing society. Norms are being broken and boarders between space and time consequently blurred. It is within our nature to be curious about the actions of others, but when does it become an unethical form of surveillance which is explored in a plethora of fictional media and channels.
The basis and early analysis of this topic will be unpacked further in this blog post including justification and reference to academic, news, political, social and pop culture sources. Through these studies, we can identify the nature of micro chipping humans and the ethical implications it will have on society through primary and secondary sources in conjunction with my digital artefact.
In my previous blog post, I talked about the IoT and my interest in further researching the topic to further understand it. To grasp the ideas of the IoT and answer the questions that I have about it, I will need to build on my knowledge from my first blog post. To recap, in my last post I chose a number of questions that I wanted to explore. These included the following questions:

Looking into the current technologies on the market that makes the IoT’s a reality.
The representations and ideas of these technologies through utopian and dystopian mediums like cinema, television and fiction. – Are we close to this viewpoint? How are these technologies being represented/sold by marketing to us now?
Privacy of the IoT and the way in which these sociable objects collect and store data and how it could potentially be used.
How are these IoT technologies being currently presented? are there fears, tensions or anxieties towards the technology and their capabilities?
So for this blog post, I will be providing an overview of the sources that I have chosen to help me further answer the questions that I have. I have found some interesting sourced which have helped me enhance my knowledge and gain a better insight into the topic, these are included below.
The first is a podcast called ‘A Conversation about the Internet of Things‘ by Chris Moore and Teodor Mitew, where a there is a conversation about the Amazon Echo, surveillance and technology-induced shifts in the perception of technology. The points being made in this podcast were very engaging and had me thinking differently about the IoT then I did at the beginning of my research. I will be providing an overview of the arguments of this source through dot points in order to make it more easier to read and digest. This source would be helpful in answering most of the questions I have listed above and will be used as a primary source.
The most insane concept that I picked up from this blog post was the idea that these types of technologies were constructed to talk to each other and the input of humans isn’t necessary. The devices are seen to be primary and humans secondary. Technology doesn’t necessarily need us, well at least devices connected to the IoT don’t. They develop their own voices and personalities, sometimes based on the people they are around, kind of like a sponge. These IoT technologies want our constant attention and are further emerging in the forefront of our lives.
Privacy is another interesting topic discussed in this podcast. People are experiencing a ‘Moral Panic‘ about the way in which these sociable objects collect and store our data and how it could potentially be used by companies and stakeholders. Trying to differentiate the aggregated public and private data and place of ownership of this data is something that people should have control over, but this isn’t the case, as stakeholders and companies have the power. Ownership, access and privacy of our data is an important topic.
Amazon Echo Alexa being the leading innovative IoT device in the market, with fast interaction to the cloud and the promise of open sources technology. Open source software makes it more superior and allows for innovation and allows for more meaningful ways for the technology to talk to each other.
Stacy Higginbotham brings up some great points in her Podcast with Kevin Tofel as they talk about the data privacy of devices connected to the internet. This source was okay and left me asking more questions rather than answering them. Some of the points were interesting, however, so I will end up using this source but definitely not on its own. This sources works well with my questions of privacy and can be used as a case study in future.
The issue of Privacy and how far companies will go to collect data was discussed with Sex toys being the example. Is it moral that an individual needs to give up their privacy when buying technologies that connect to the internet and would legislations work to protect data that items like sex toys would collect? Should the consumer have to do the research into these types of technologies and their connection to the cloud before buying the product?
There needs to be a decision made on the types of data objects that are connected to the internet should be allowed to aggravate and review. And the points made in the above source ask this as well, what is public and private data.
Where am I with this research and the finished Project?
My plan for this research project has changed since my last post. I was originally thinking of doing a blog post series to answer my questions. I have since changed my mind and am going to push myself out of my comfort zone and try to do something that I haven’t attempted before. So now, for this project, I try and present my findings and answer my questions in the medium of a podcast. In terms of my project process, I have been trying to find other sources and articles to use that will help me. I have been a little lost for time, but once some of my other assessments are out of the way I will be spending more time on this and giving it my all.
